How do eye safety goggles protect our eyes?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends protecting the eyes in all possible exposure environments, in which case workers may be at risk of contracting infectious diseases through eye exposure. This document provides background information and specific details about eye protection, and is intended to familiarize the staff with the various eye protectors available, their characteristics and applicable uses. Workers should understand that ordinary prescription glasses and contact lenses are not considered eye protection. Eye protection devices prevent infectious substances from entering the eyes, and are usually combined with other personal protective equipment (PPE).

This passage is going to talk about the following questions of eye safety goggle:

(1) Introduction to commonly used types of protective goggles

(2) What are the combinations of goggles and other personal protective equipment?

(3) How to remove eye safety goggles?

(4) How to disinfect eye safety goggles?

1) Introduction to commonly used types of protective goggles

goggles

Properly assembled goggles with indirect vents* and the manufacturer's anti-fog coating provide the most reliable practical eye protection for splashes, sprays and respiratory droplets. The new type of goggles can provide better indirect airflow characteristics to reduce fogging, and provide better peripheral vision effects and more size options to make the goggles suitable for different workers. Various types of goggles can be fully fitted on prescription glasses with minimal clearance. However, to be effective, the goggles must fit snugly, especially from the corner of the eyebrows. The goggles are very effective in protecting the eyes, but they do not provide splash or spray protection to other parts of the face.

*Directly ventilated goggles may infiltrate due to splashes or sprays; therefore, for infection control, it is best to use indirect ventilation or non-ventilated goggles.

Safety goggles

Safety glasses of safety goggles can provide impact protection, but they cannot provide the same level of splash or droplet protection as goggles, and should generally not be used for infection control.

Full face respirator

Full-face elastic respirators and electric air purifying respirators (PAPR) are designed for respiratory protection, but due to their design they can also provide efficient eye protection. The choice of this type of PPE should be based on the assessment of respiratory hazards in infection control situations, but as an added benefit, it can also provide the best eye protection.

2) What are the combinations of goggles and other personal protective equipment?

Eye protection should be selected in the context of other personal protective equipment requirements. When used with some half-face respirators, safety glasses may not be installed correctly, and similarly, some respirators may not install the mask correctly. Once the personal protective equipment requirements are determined for a specific infection control situation, the selected personal protective equipment should be pre-tested to ensure proper cooperation and protection when used as a whole.

3) How to remove eye safety goggles?

The goggles can only be removed through the part of the device that holds the device to the head (for example, plastic temples, elastic straps, cable ties), as this is considered relatively "clean". Do not touch the front and sides of the device (for example, goggles, face shields), as these surfaces are most likely to be contaminated by sprays, splashes or droplets during patient care. Non-disposable eye protection devices should be placed in designated containers for subsequent cleaning and disinfection. The sequence of removing personal protective equipment should follow the established plan that infection control personnel should develop, taking into account the need to remove other PPE.

4) How to disinfect eye safety goggles?

When reprocessing reusable eye protection equipment, follow procedures for cleaning and disinfecting used patient care equipment set by medical institutions. You can consult the manufacturer for guidance and experience on disinfection of their respective products. Contaminated eye protection equipment should be reprocessed in the area where other contaminated equipment is handled. Eye protection devices should be physically cleaned and disinfected with designated hospital disinfectants, then rinsed and air-dried. Wear gloves when cleaning and disinfecting the equipment. We also provide Ice Bag Pack, Personal Care, contact us now.
