Covid Testing Faces Delays Again As Demand Surges Ahead Of The Holiday

Publish Time: 2021-02-06     Origin: Site

With the holidays approaching, some companies require employees to return to their offices, and anxiety about the virus increases with the daily case count, and the demand for accurate Covid-19 testing is surging.

In the past week, the average of Covid-19 tests was conducted 1.6 million times a day, compared with a seven-day average of less than 900,000 in July, according to data compiled by the Covid Tracking Project. (Refer from The Atlantic Magazine)

The surge in demand is yet put pressure on the supply chain of PCR molecular tests - the gold standard for Covid-19 testing - leading to long lines for testing, shortages of supplies, and processing delays across the country.

National labs cannot obtain enough necessary testing supplies. The American Clinical Laboratory Association, an industry trade group, previously warned that its members are facing delays or cancellations on orders for critical supplies, such as pipette tips.
